The oldest, most populous and powerful of the Achaean colonies was built in 720 BC. it developed rapidly thanks to the fertility of its territory: its products (wheat, oil, wine, etc …) were transported throughout the Mediterranean. The fame achieved by the city was linked to the luxury, pride and laziness of its population. The city gained so much power that it also began to found colonies: Scalea, Policastro and Paestum. However Sibari did not have a particularly long history and had a tragic end because it was flooded by the Crati river which had been deviated by the Crotoniati, opponents of Sibari. This forced its citizens to move elsewhere, but with the aim of returning to their homeland. This happened in 444 BC, when Athens helped the Sybarite exiles to build Turi, heir of Sibari.
The city had a square setting and carried the sign of Athens’ classical culture. In III BC Turi was an ally of Rome and in 192 a Roman colony was created with the name of “Copia”. In VI d.C. the city was abandoned and its wealth was hidden under meters of land. This wonderful archaeological heritage was rediscovered thanks to the archaeological excavations that allowed to bring to light what remains of Sibari-Turi-Copia.
